“Disturbing Call” – Excerpt from DANGER IN PARADISE (Guardians, Inc: Dangerous)

Grayson Duvall is one of my more enigmatic characters. As the head of Guardians, Inc’s Chicago office, Gray’s past as an FBI Profiler and Marine MP make him a first-rate investigator and an impressive undercover operative. But Gray is careful to keep his professional life separate from his personal life.

When his identical twin, Calvin, gets into trouble, Gray’s about to get dragged into a conspiracy that could go all the way to the Vatican, or straight into Hell itself.

“Disturbing Call” — Excerpt from DANGER IN PARADISE (Guardians, Inc: Dangerous, Book 1)

The phone on Gray’s desk was ringing. It hadn’t done that in nearly a week. Everyone who knew Gray knew he was gone. Everyone except his brother.

Her pulse pounding, Sally glanced around to be sure the office was empty, then snatched up the phone, breathlessly answering, “Hello?”

“Is this Grayson Duvall’s number?” A voice so like Gray’s it made her heart trip over itself, queried warily. The fear in his tone, however, told her this wasn’t Gray. Gray was never afraid.

“Where is he? I need to talk to him. This is Cal.”

She sucked in a breath. She already knew who it was, but something told her she couldn’t let him know that. “He’s not here, Cal.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know,” she responded with quiet honesty, clutching the phone. “I was hoping you could tell me.”

There was a long silence, and then, “I don’t know what you mean.”

“I think you do.” Sally drew a breath, summoning her courage and wrapping herself in her anger. “He left here because of your letter. He said he was headed to Florida.”

There was silence for a long moment, then a suspicious, “Who is this? How do you know about my letter?”

“My name is Sally Davis. I delivered the letter to Gray.”

There was a quiet oath from the other side of the line and then, a harsh, “Get out. Get out of New York, now.”

“I don’t–”

Now.” The line went dead, and Sally sat back, staring at the phone as a chill washed over her. That wasn’t an idle suggestion. Calvin Duvall knew who she was, and he knew something about her that she didn’t know. It was an eerie feeling, and she knew only one way to counter it. She had to get to Florida, and find Gray. Gray would know what this was all about.
